Holidays are Prime Times for Michigan DUI Arrests

Holidays such as the Fourth of July are occasions for fun and celebration – and they are also a time of drunk driving arrests in Michigan.

We live in a society where festive events are often associated with drinking. But when used in excess at a social gathering, alcohol can result in wrecks, injuries and criminal prosecution.

A case in point: a drunk driver in Rochester Hills caused a three-car collision that sent a man to the hospital with serious injuries on St. Patrick’s Day.

The incident happened at 1:55 p.m. at the intersection of Auburn Road and Barclay Circle. According to an Oakland County Sheriff’s Office report, a 28-year-old Shelby Township man had a blood alcohol level of .130 when he caused the crash.

A 45-year-old Rochester Hills resident was transported to McLaren Hospital in Pontiac in serious but stable condition.

Holiday Enforcement of DUI Laws

Police enforcement of drunk driving laws has become more aggressive in recent years. This is especially true during holidays like the Fourth of July, Labor Day, New Year’s Eve and St. Patrick’s Day.

Some holiday drunk drivers are arrested at routine traffic stops. Others are apprehended for erratic driving, such as speeding, weaving from lane to lane and not using headlights at night.

Police officers are trained to use their senses to observe a driver’s condition and look for signs of drunk driving. If the officer smells alcohol on your breath, hears slurred speech or sees an open container of alcohol, you will likely be detained and subjected to a DUI investigation. This may include a series of field sobriety tests.

If you are eventually charged with drunk driving or OWI, you should immediately contact a qualifiedMichigan drunk driving lawyer for representation.

Enjoy your holidays – but do so responsibly.
