Sterling Heights,
Michigan
is comprised of a 37 square mile landmass in south –
eastern Michigan. Sterling Heights is in
Macomb County.
According to the
2000 U.S. Census, approximately 124,471 people
reside in this metropolitan area with an estimated 2005
population increase of 2.9% for a total of 128,034. The
median household income was $60,494, considerably higher
than the state average of $44,667, while the per capita
money income at $24,958 was ahead of the state average
by approximately $2,700. The median house value was
$160,700, which exceeded the state median values of
$115,600.
Previously known as Sterling Township,
in 1968 Sterling Heights was officially incorporated as
a city. Since there was already a town named Sterling in
Michigan, The word Heights was added to distinguish it.
The name Sterling Oaks was also considered at the time.
Sterling Heights, MI, is home to the
Lakeside Mall which began construction in Sterling
Heights in 1976 and has grown to a 2 floor, 180 unit
mall since then.
Aside from myriad shopping experiences, the mall also
features a movie theater, ice rink, and water slides. It
was built as an entertainment and shopping destination
and you can easily “spend the day” at the Mall.
Sterling Heights is home to a mixture of
residential and commercial properties. There is a
one-mile wide industrial corridor cutting the city in
half, north and south. Companies in Sterling Heights
include
DaimlerChrysler,
Visteon,
General Dynamics and many smaller auto parts and
accessory suppliers.
Chrysler's Sterling Heights Stamping Plant is the
largest metal stamping plant in the world. Publishing
plants for the
Detroit News and
Detroit Free Press are also located in Sterling
Heights.
While you won’t find many tourist
attractions in Sterling Heights, you will find strong
support for local business and industry through the
Chamber of Commerce and many services for the
residents such as the award winning
Sterling Public Library.
Money magazine, in August of 2006,
listed Sterling Heights as No. 37 on its list of the 90
"Best
Small Cities" to live in. Sterling Heights was
ranked the
sixth safest city in the U.S. with a population of
100,000 to 499,999.
