Plymouth, Michigan consists of the City of Plymouth and Plymouth Township.  Together, these communities enjoy national ranking among the best places to live in the United States.  The Plymouth communities lie within Wayne County, in the shadows of metro Detroit.

The City of Plymouth, according to the 2000 Census, housed 9,022 residents.  Although the City of Plymouth is located within the borders of Plymouth Township, the city remains administratively and politically autonomous.  Plymouth ranks among MI's earliest established communities.  The northern portion of this unassuming community rests on the historic remains of Phoenix, a legendary ghost town.

Plymouth, MI boasts a vibrant downtown district, where myriad cafes, restaurants, and retail establishments line the borders of a large scenic park.  This charming community has twelve parks, and is the host of numerous community celebrations, such as the Ice Sculpture Spectacular and Art in the Park.  Established in 1980, the beloved Art in the Park celebration ranks as the second largest art fair in Michigan.

Plymouth's International Ice Sculpture Spectacular is North America's largest and oldest ice carving event.  Held in January, this weeklong festival began in 1982.  An average of 500,000 people attend this winter event each year.  Plymouth's annual Fall Festival is also a popular event.  Residents enjoy a well-balanced array of civil, cultural, and recreational activities, with more than fifty active recreational groups.

In 2007, CNN Money Magazine listed Plymouth Township, MI as the 37th best place to live in the United States.  Plymouth Township features an active citizenry, with a reported a population of 27,798.  This bustling community hosts the Plymouth Whalers, who earned the Ontario Hockey League championship in 2007.  The Whalers events take place in Compuware Arena.

The communities that comprise Plymouth, Michigan are within 25 minutes to the east of Ann Arbor and 30 minutes outside of downtown Detroit.  The area teems with industrial parks, where the research facilities for businesses such as Isuzu and Poof-Slink Corporation reside.  Plymouth also enjoys close proximity to the University of Michigan, which lies within one of the nation's finest high technology corridors.  Popular destinations in the Plymouth, MI area include the Detroit River, Fort Wayne, Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village, Lake St. Clair Penn Theater, Plymouth Historical Museum, and outstanding several golf courses.

Education plays an important role in the Plymouth communities.  Students have several private schools from which to choose, while the Plymouth-Canton Community School District provides an outstanding public school system.  The district includes sixteen elementary school, five middle schools, and three high schools, and operates the Plymouth-Canton Educational Park, Michigan's only educational park.  Those seeking higher education have more than twenty options located throughout Wayne County.  These include Wayne State University and the University of Michigan-Dearborn.  These fine institutions contribute to the high quality of the local workforce, where residents typically earn per capita incomes that rank well above the national average.
