Grosse Pointe, Michigan,The larger geographical area, which Grosse Pointe, Michigan is part of, was originally explored and settled by the French. Early primary industries in the area were farming and fishing. The Revolutionary War and also the Civil War tended to homogenize the outlying areas while French Canadian influence gathered strength in Grosse Pointe. In the early 1900’s large fortunes made in the Detroit area from transportation along the Great Lakes, and Michigan lumber and furniture, spurred residential growth in the Pointes. The advent of the mass production of the automobile created the bulk of the wealth necessary to put the Pointes on the national map as a large, noteworthy suburban residential community.

The area referred to as "Grosse Pointe, MI” actually consists of five "Pointes" or individual cities   casually referred to as "the Shores," "the Farms," "the Park," "the Woods," and "the City" (The City of Grosse Pointe). Municipal services such as police and fire coverage are provided separately by the Pointe’s, while other services such as Libraries and Schools operate at the County level.  Grosse Pointe Woods, Shores, Farm and Park plus the main City of Grosse Pointe are all in Wayne County, Michigan. The Grosse Pointes are situated along the shores of Lake St. Clair, a 400 square mile lake that forms the link between the Great Lakes of Lake Huron and Lake Erie.

In the 2000 U.S. Census, Grosse Pointe, MI had a median family income of $101,889.  College degrees are common in the city.  Census data is mostly reported at the Wayne County level, and must be adjusted for numbers reported in the “Township” and other locations that are not in the five main cities and towns.

Since its inception in 1922, The Grosse Pointe Public School System serving the five Grosse Pointes has maintained top honors and results by consistently following the mandates in its original charter. To pay premium salaries to insure getting and keeping the best teachers, and providing the best infrastructure from buildings to classroom materials to insure that students have the best and most comprehensive tools.

Located on the shore of Lake St. Clair in Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan is the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. A private marina and sailing club founded in 1914. The club is visibly prominent and a well-known landmark along the north shoreline of Lake St. Clair. An 18th century Italian Renaissance-style clubhouse was designed by Boston architect Guy Lowell. The clubhouse features stucco walls, a red tile roof, and a 190-foot tall bell tower, which serves as a navigational aid for boaters on the lake. The GPYC is known locally simply as the "Yacht Club" because it is the most prominent yacht club in the area, although nearby Bayview Yacht Club boasts many more racing sailors. Amenities of the club, besides the marina itself, include a bowling alley, several tennis courts, lighted paddle tennis courts and a sailing center with a large fleet of club owned sailboats.

Grosse Pointe, Michigan, once recognized for the many estates and prominent families of the industrial pioneers of the area, is now home to a beautiful and diverse community. The neighborhoods are quiet, tree lined, and still maintain that old world charm.  Grosse Pointe, Michigan also features all of the accoutrements of fine living such as select shops, excellent schools, community centers, libraries, hospitals, churches and more.
