When I recently had an issue at the airport, I decided to call Paul on the weekend. He called me back on a Sunday! He dealt with my issue without me having to fly back to Michigan and got it dismissed. Until you go through the court system especially for the first time, you don't have a sense for how harrowing it can be. - E.W.

Detroit, Michigan is a major port city on the Detroit River in the Midwestern United States. Situated in Wayne County, Detroit serves as the county seat. Detroit has the distinction of being the only major city in the United States that can look south and see Canada --Detroit’s 138.7 square miles are located to the north of Windsor, Ontario. The cities of Hamtramck and Highland Park both lie entirely within the boundaries of the city of Detroit.
The city name comes from the French word “strait”, with the Detroit River being the strait of Lake Erie, linking Lake Huron and Lake Erie. French explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac landed on the banks of the Detroit River and established a fort, noting the north bank of the river was an ideal location for a settlement. There, in 1701, he and 51 French-Canadians founded a settlement called Fort Ponchartrain du Détroit. France offered free land to attract families to Detroit, and in 1760 French rule gave way to British rule. In 1796,Detroit became part of the U.S., and it was incorporated as a city in 1815.
Today, Detroit is the largest city in the state of Michigan with a estimated population of 837,711 in 2007, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The Detroit Area Metropolitan area, consisting of Macomb, Oakland and Wayne Counties, has a population of 4,008,474 residents.
Motown and the Motor City are used interchangeably to describe Detroit's duel role as a U.S. car capital and hub of the American music scene. Live music has been prominent in Detroit's nightlife scene since the 1950s, but Berry Gordy Jr., who founded Motown Records, brought the Motown sound to Detroit. Motown Records introduced the nation to Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Smoky Robinson, Michael Jackson, the Temptations and Diana Ross. Today, there are two world-renowned live music venues in the Detroit area: DTE Energy Music Theatre and The Palace of Auburn Hills. The city celebrates its musical heritage with annual musical events that include the Detroit International Jazz Festival, the Urban Organic Music Conference, the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, the Motor City Music Conference, and the Concert of Colors.
The Detroit metropolitan region constitutes a major manufacturing center, most notably as the world headquarters of the Big Three automobile companies of General Motors, Ford and Chrysler. The city is also the home base for the nation's autoworkers' union, the UAW. In 1896, Henry Ford built his first car in Detroit using the moving assembly line. This brought dozens of automobile manufacturing companies to the Detroit area, earning the city the moniker of Motor City.
The bustling Detroit Metro Airport welcomes over 35 million visitors a year to the city and its metro region. It is the 12th busiest airport in the United States, with 17 different airlines offering flights worldwide. The Coleman A. Young Airport (formerly known as the Detroit City Airport) encompasses 263 acres in the city of Detroit – and has expansion plans! The Detroit Transportation Corporation works in conjunction with the Detroit People Mover (DPM), a fully automated light rail system that operates on an elevated single 2.9-mile track loop in Detroit's central business district. Early openings and extensions of evening hours are provided to accommodate the frequent and exciting special events that take place in the Central Business District.
The Detroit Public Schools (DPS) district is the largest school district in Michigan. Detroit is home to several institutions of higher learning, including Wayne State University, Michigan's only urban public research university.
